    • PURPOSE: A steam turbine and a method for eliminating bending of a rotor shaft are provided to eliminate or minimize thermal bending caused by non-uniform heat distribution at the circumference of a rotatable component, resulting from the frictional contact between a brush seal and the rotatable component. CONSTITUTION: A steam turbine comprises a rotatable component(11) including a rotor shaft(12) having a rotor shaft surface; a fixed component(17) about the rotatable component; a brush seal(26) carried by the fixed component for sealing engagement with the rotatable component; at least a pair of wheels(14) on the rotatable component spaced axially from one another. The rotatable component includes a plurality of buckets(16) spaced circumferentially from one another on each of the wheels and a unit for inhibiting non-uniform circumferential heat transfer to the rotor shaft surface due to heat generated by frictional contact between the brush seal and the rotatable component thereby to eliminate or minimize bending of the rotatable component. The inhibiting unit includes an annular platform(40) projecting radially outwardly of the rotor shaft surface at an axial location between the wheels. The brush seal is disposed between the buckets on the wheels and the brush seal engages a sealing surface on the platform radially outwardly of the rotor shaft surface.

    • PURPOSE: A device and method for accurately positioning a turbine brush seal is provided to improve seal performance. CONSTITUTION: A device comprises a labyrinth seal segment(18), having a slot(30) for defining an interior ledge(36) opening toward a direction of a rotor(R) and facing the rotor(R), and a brush seal segment(28) inserted into the slot(30) with having an outer shoulder part(38) facing to the rotor(R) and lying over the interior ledge(36) of the labyrinth seal segment(18). The brush seal segment(28) can move radially relative to the labyrinth seal segment(18) and rotor(R). The shoulder(38) of the brush seal segment(28) can move toward and away from the interior ledge(36) of the labyrinth seal segment(18). And pressing member(46) forces the brush seal segment(28) to the rotor(R).

    • PURPOSE: A brush seal and a method of forming a brush seal segment are provided to protect end bristles in making an arch-shaped brush seal segment and get bristles of uniform flexibility all over the circumferential range of the seal. CONSTITUTION: A brush seal segment includes a plurality of bristles(16) disposed between a pair of backing plates(20, 22). The bristles are welded(24) to another adjacent proximal ends(23) and to the edges of the backing plates remote from the bristle tips(18). An end plate(32) is welded to the end faces of the backing plates at each of the opposite ends of the segment. Each end plate terminates at approximately one-half the length of the bristles along the end face to prevent the bristles from bending circumferentially and axially during handling while maintaining substantially uniform flexibility of the bristles throughout the entire length of the segment.
