    • The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition including curcumin as an active ingredient for treating or preventing non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases. The non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases may be obese fatty liver diseases or diabetic fatty liver diseases. Moreover, the present invention relates to a food composition including curcumin as an active ingredient for alleviating or preventing non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases. The food composition may be a health functional food composition. The curcumin is derived from an edible plant so as not to cause side effects or problems related to stability, effectively controls the expression of fatty acid synthase (FAS) and fatty acid biosynthesis regulatory transcription factors (SREBP-1), remarkably promotes the expression of PPAR-alphs, and has an excellent function of reinforcing AMP-activated protein kinase activities. Accordingly, the curcumin has excellent effects in treating, preventing, or alleviating non-alcoholic fatty liver caused by the accumulation of fat in liver cells so that the curcumin can be used as a medical composition for treating or preventing fatty liver diseases or a food composition for alleviating or preventing fatty liver diseases and also used in improving liver functions or protecting the liver.
