    • PURPOSE: A controlling method of a washing machine is provided to determine an amount of detergent according to turbidity of cleaning water, thereby notifying a user of additional injection of the detergent. CONSTITUTION: Turbidity of cleaning water is sensed(103). A level of an amount of injected detergent is determined by using the turbidity(104). Cleaning time is controlled based on the level of the injected detergent(106). When preset detergent dissolving time comes, the turbidity is sensed. When the turbidity is sensed, the turbidity periodically sensed for the preset detergent dissolving time is average. When the level of the detergent is determined, reference turbidity is compared with the sensed turbidity.

The controller detects the cloudiness of the water according to the rate of the light quantity delivered to each photo diode. A plurality of photo diodes has a first and a second photo diodes(42,43). The first photo diode receives the light coming from the lighting-emitting unit. The second photo diode receives the light scatted and coming from the lighting-emitting unit.
