    • PURPOSE: A novel glutamate decarboxylase variant is provided to cheaply prepare gamma-aminobutyric acid. CONSTITUTION: A glutamate decarboxylase variant contains 89th amino acid(glutamate) which is substituted with glutamine or alanine with deleted 2-15 amino acid residues from carboxyl terminal in an amino acid sequence of sequence number 1. The variant contains an affinity tag inserted to an amino acid terminal. The affinity tag is histidine, maltose binding protein(MBP), thioredoxin, NusA(N utilization substance A), or glutathione-transferase(GST) tag. The mutant contains an amino acid sequence of sequence number 2, 4, 6, or 8. A gene encoding the variant contains a nucleic acid sequence of sequence number 3, 5, 7, or 9. A method for preparing gamma-aminobutyric acid comprises a step of contacting glutamate or glutamate salt substrate with the variant.
