    • A new melting and holding method for the material rods in a material melting and holding apparatus of a metal molding machine which uses a melting cylinder for melting of material rods and submersion melting by a molten material in a furnace body is provided to increase the melting efficiency and secure a sufficient reserve quantity as compared with the conventional method. A method for melting a material rod(M) in a material melting and holding apparatus of a metal molding machine is characterized in that the material melting and holding apparatus provided at the metal molding machine comprises a furnace body(31) of a melting and holding furnace(30), and a melting cylinder(34) for the material rod and a material supply cylinder(35) for directly supplying the material rod into the furnace body, the melting cylinder and the material supply cylinder being provided in parallel with each other on the furnace body, and the method comprises: melting the material rod using the melting cylinder before supplying molten material(M1) from the melting cylinder into the melting and holding furnace when molding is initiated; supplying the material rod from the material supply cylinder to a bottom portion of the furnace body to submerge and melt the material rod into the molten material in the melting and holding furnace; and maintaining the submersion melting in the melting and holding furnace after initiating molding.
