    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the propagation mode of light on the terminal-processed end from falling into disorder in an optical fiber having a plurality of kinds of pores of different diameters. SOLUTION: The photonic crystal fiber is provided with a core 1, a clad part 2 which is disposed around the core 1 and has a large number of pores 4b, 4c extended in the optical fiber axis direction, arranged in a crystal form, and an overclad part 3 formed around the clad part 2. The pores 4b, 4c comprise the first pores and the second pores having a larger diameter than that of the first pores. Edges of the pores are closed at least on an end of the photonic crystal fiber.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization beam splitter which has superior characteristics of all of light resistance, long-period stability, a price, production machinability, etc. SOLUTION: The polarization beam splitter 10 is so configured that the output of a polarization holding optical fiber coupler 11 of a precedent stage is inputted to polarization holding optical fiber couplers 12a and 12b of a trailing stage. Specially, the polarization optical fiber couplers 11, 12a, and 12b having different center wavelengths of extinction ratios are preferably connected in stages. Polarization holding optical fibers constituting the polarization holding optical fiber couplers 11, 12a, and 12b are preferably such that a concentric circle of a core or a clad does neither touches a stressing section nor includes the stressing section in it and the maximum diameter is ≥20 μm. Further, the polarization holding optical fiber constituting the polarization holding optical couplers 11, 12a, and 12b are preferably PANDA type optical fibers or bow-tie type optical fibers.
