It is thus considered that if the compound is made of single material it has a psuedo- polyquantum well structure where sealing is made by the van der Waals gap and has a quantitized electronic level. The temperature dependency of this level of energy is larger than the normal forbidding band width of semiconductor, and light absorption shifts largely to the side of long wave side due to slight temperature increase. Consequently, the absorption or reflection spectrum of the layered compound is monitored so that the measurement of temperature is made possible. To a temperature detection element 101 constituted of such a layered compound beams are radiated from a light source 102, and from the intensity of reflection light beam received 103 the temperature of an element 101 is measured.
