SOLUTION: This sewing machine is provided with a bobbin case 11 in which a lower-thread bobbin 12 removable through an opening 101c in a needle plate 101 is housed, a tension generating section 13 which gives tension to a lower thread guided from the lower-thread bobbin 12 through the engagement therewith, a lower-thread cutter 14 located at the end of a lower-thread pathway to reserve the lower thread of a certain length guided from the lower-thread bobbin, a cover 15 which removably covers the opening, a covering plate 20 which covers the area surrounding the lower-thread bobbin under the cover, a bending section 16 in which the lower thread is crooked in the lower-thread pathway, a first guide section 30 which guides the lower thread to the bending section 16, and a second guide section 40 which guides the lower thread to the lower-thread cutter. The bobbin case, the tension generating section, the bending section, and the lower-thread cutter are disposed within the area under the opening.
