    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polishing apparatus that can polish a spherical component having a high polishing precision at a high polishing efficiency, and to provide a method for manufacturing a spherical component.SOLUTION: The polishing apparatus 1 includes: a roller-shaped grinding stone 5 having an outer peripheral surface 11 formed with a rolling groove 12 having an arcuate inner surface 13 to which an abrasive grain is arranged; a back up roller 6 pivotally supported in parallel to the grinding stone 5 while being spaced apart a distance 9 relative to the grinding stone 5; a motion mechanism 7 for moving at least one of the grinding stone 5 and the back up roller 6 forward and backward in an axial direction thereof; and a press-retaining member 8 disposed in the vicinity of the distance 9 and press-retaining the spherical component 3 to the grinding stone 5 and the back up roller 6. The method for manufacturing a spherical component includes a step of exerting a first rolling force in a rotating direction of the grinding stone 5 and a second rolling force in a direction different from the rotating direction on the spherical component 3 disposed in the rolling groove 12 where abrasive grains are arranged, to polish the spherical component 3 by the rolling groove 12.
