    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fetal monitoring system which smoothens a process for monitoring the heart rate of a baby who has not born yet, and a fetal monitoring method. SOLUTION: The fetal monitoring system 10 includes: an AECG(Abdominal ElectroCardioGram)/PCG(PhonoCardioGram) sensor 12 which generates an AECG/PCG signal 30 in response to monitoring of a fetal heart; a US(UltraSound) transducer 14 which generates a US signal 32 in response to the monitoring of the fetal heart; and a computer 40 which assess the quality of an AECG/PCG signal 30 and compares the assessed quality of the AECG/PCG signal 30 with a selectable threshold value. The computer 40 is configured to disable the operation of the US transducer 14 and process the AECG/PCG signal 30 to provide a fetal heart rate estimated value as long as the assessed quality of the AECG/PCG signal 30 exceeds the selectable threshold value. The computer 40 is configured to enable the operation of the US transducer 14 and process the US signal 32 to provide a fetal heart rate estimated value only when the assessed quality of the AECG/PCG signal 30 is equal to or less than the selectable threshold.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a childbirth monitoring apparatus having a pulse wave propagation speed information measuring function which can rapidly judge a risk that a fetus becomes an encephalopathy. SOLUTION: A fetal electrocardiogram and a volumetric pulse wave are sequentially detected by using an electrocardiographic signal detector 32 and a photoelectric pulse wave sensor 42. A pulse wave propagation time DT for propagating in a fatal body is sequentially calculated by a pulse wave propagation time calculating means 58 from the electrocardiogram and the volumetric pulse wave. A heart rate HR is sequentially calculated from the electrocardiogram, and a pain waveform (pain strength) is sequentially detected by a pain signal sensor 12. The pain waveform, the heart rate HR and the pulse wave propagating time DT are sequentially displayed by using the same time base on a display 52 and a printer 54 by a graph display means 60. Thus, since the change in the fetal blood pressure can be monitored from the change trends of the pain waveform, the heart rate HR and the pulse wave propagating time DT (particularly the change trend of the pulse wave propagation time DT), the riskiness that the fatus becomes the encephalopathy can be rapidly and accurately judged.
