The third impurity layer 7 is connected to an impurity region portion 16, and a gate electrode 3 is formed so as to cover the third impurity layer 7. With this configuration, during a photoelectric conversion time period, an overflow path for surplus electrons is formed in a direction headed from the photoelectric conversion portion 11 to the third impurity layer 7 through the second impurity layer 6, to drain the surplus electrons of the photoelectric conversion portion 11.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state image pickup device which reduces a current flowing through a power source of a vertical control circuit when driving an electrode of a holding portion.
      SOLUTION: A solid-state image pickup device performing a global exposure operation which performs an exposure at a start time and an end time of all lines respectively matching with each other, has a plurality of unit pixels (101) arranged in a two-dimensional matrix state. The unit pixel has: a photoelectric converting portion (131) generating a pixel signal by a photoelectric conversion; a holding portion (135) holding the pixel signal generated by the photoelectric converting portion; and a holding portion gate electrode (134) for transferring the pixel signal generated by the photoelectric converting portion to the holding portion. The unit pixel also has: a first control line commonly connected to the holding portion gate electrode within the unit pixel of the same line, a vertical control circuit (108) for resetting the unit pixel; and a first driving line connected to the first control line and is independent without being connected to the vertical control circuit.

    • PURPOSE: To reduce possible a residual image, by reading out a signal charge stored in a photo detecting section before a photo detecting period again after transferring it to the storage with a vertical shift register and opening a gate section so as to read out a remaining charge to the vertical shift register.
      CONSTITUTION: A photo detecting section 2 possible for the storage of charge separated at a channel stop region 10 between vertical registers 1 mutually, a photo sensing region 3, a storage section 5 and a horizontal shift register 6 to read out a signal charge coupled to the storage section are provided. After the sweep-out transfer of unnecessary charge in the vertical shift register 1 of the photo sensing region, the transfer of a signal charge from the photo detecting section 2 to the register 1, and the transfer of the signal charge from the register 1 to the storage section 5, the residual charge of the photo detecting section 2 determined with the signal charge is transferred again from the photo detecting section 2 to the register 1, allowing to reduce possibly the residual image.
