    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus that reads an image from an original on a contact glass by means of an image sensor housed in a carriage and that maintains the quality of image reading while being downsized.SOLUTION: A multifunctional device 1 slides an image sensor 20, which is housed in a sensor housing portion 31, along a slide shaft 25 together with a carriage 30 so as to read an image from an original on a contact glass 16. The carriage 30 is attached to the slide shaft 25 through a shaft holding portion 38 provided at the longitudinal center thereof, and is allowed to be swung around the slide shaft 25. The carriage 30 has a first tapered end 32, and a first opening 34, formed at one end thereof where a first holder member 40 and springs 50 are attached. The carriage 30 has a second tapered end 33, and a second opening 35, formed at the other end thereof where a second holder member 45 and springs 50 are attached.
