    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming technology having higher quality than before while controlling a load in a hardware field or a software field.SOLUTION: A printer 100 has an edge detection part 112 for detecting an edge pixel using attribute information X, a screen treatment part 113 for binarizing each pixel contained in image data by screen treatment, a pulse-width converting part 114 for converting each pixel contained in the image data into pulse-width data according to an input tone value, and an output part 115 for outputting, in each pixel, the pulse-width data from either of the screen treatment part 113 and the pulse-width converting part 114. The output part 115 outputs the pulse-width data from the pulse-width converting part 114 about an edge pixel and the pulse-width data from the screen treatment part 113 about an edge-less pixel.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve granularity and dot stability in multilevel error diffusion processing.
      SOLUTION: An input image is halved in size in a sub-scanning direction by means of a two-pixel averaging section 101, and then is subjected to multilevel error diffusion processing by means of a multilevel error diffusion section 102. Thereafter, each pixel is replaced with two pixels adjacent in the sub-scanning direction by means of a section 103 for replacing one pixel with two pixels. For the image where each pixel has been replaced with two pixels, pixel values adjacent in the sub-scanning direction in the block are switched in each checkwise 2×2 pixel block by means of a density value switching section 104, thus forming dark blocks, each consisting of dark dots, and light blocks, each consisting of light dots, on a 2×2 pixel block-basis, and hence an exposure area can be focused during PWM conversion.
