    • PURPOSE:To prevent generation of arcing in an outer tube by inserting and connecting a series connection body consisting of a Nichrome winding resistor and a heat response switch connected in serious to each other between main and auxiliary electrodes. CONSTITUTION:An auxiliary electrode 4 is installed near at least one main electrode 2 out of the main electrodes 2 and 3 provided on both ends of a glow tube 1. The Penning's gas which mainly consists of mercury, halide, and neon is sealed in the inner part of the glow tube 1 and mixture gas which mainly consists of neon and nitrogen is sealed in an outer tube 7 which incorporates the glow tube 1. A series connection body consisting of a Nichrome widing resistor 5 with a resistivity of 95-400OMEGA and a heat response switch 6 connected in series to eah other is inserted between the auxiliary electrode 4 and the main electrode 3. This series connection body is housed in the outer tube 7.

    • PURPOSE:To improve starting characteristic by starting a metal halide lamp where a luminescent bulb having an auxiliary electrode is accommodated in the external bulb sealed after being filled with inactive gas, with a glow discharge bulb by means of a 2-contact-points type thermal responsive switch. CONSTITUTION:A luminescent bulb 1 sealed after a being filled with a metal halogenide, mercury and rare gas and provided with an auxiliary electrodes 2 is accommodated within an external bulb 9 sealed after being filled with an inactive gas, and a series circuit consisting of a glow discharge bulb 5, a current limiting element 7 and 2-contact-points type thermal responsive switch 12 arranged at the lower side of the luminescent bulb 1 is connected to the luminescent bulb 1 in parallel, thereby forming a metal halide lamp. A series connected body including a glow discharge bulb 5 and the luminescent bulb 1 are connected in parallel at the time of starting the lamp, and when the lamp is once started, the main electrode 3 is short-circuitted to the auxiliary electrode 2 through the operation of thermal responsive switch 12 after it is started. Thereby increase of starting voltage can be suppressed and the lamp can be certainly started.
