    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processor, an image processing method, and a program capable of producing a high quality binarization image with a relatively small amount of computation.SOLUTION: An image processor includes a binarization unit 21 for generating corrected image data by filtering a reading multi-level image the sample area of which is set by a sample area setting unit 20, and then binarizing the corrected image data, a correlation operation unit 22 for determining the correlation of binarization image data and reading multi-level image data, and an optimum binarization information selection unit 23 for selecting optimization information by correlation. The binarization unit 21 includes a parameter value setting unit 212 for setting a plurality of parameter values by adding a variable addition amount to the coefficients of a target pixel in a filter, and a filtering unit 211 for generating corrected image data corresponding to the parameter values, by forming a matrix including a target pixel in the center and surrounding pixels, and filtering the reading multi-level image data by using a filter for which the parameter values are set.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To handle situations in which page background varies in color/intensity, as is the case when bleed-through artifacts from the reverse side of a page appear in the background particularly in an algorithm for evaluating which pixels belong to the background of a scanned page. SOLUTION: In determining background regions, including properly classifying bleed-through artifacts regions as such, the algorithm uses multiple local and global criteria for making the determination. In addition to being able to find large connected pieces of background, the algorithm is also able to find isolated islands of background by analyzing transition characteristics of neighboring regions. Regions are identified on the basis of similar local features and also by the nature of transition between foreground regions that do not directly share a boundary.
