    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable dispersion compensating device which can accurately compensate the wavelength dispersion of an optical transmission line according to a high-speed transmission rate with a simple configuration. SOLUTION: A dispersion compensating optical fiber 40 is connected to a variable dispersion compensator 41 to form the variable dispersion compensating device. The variable dispersion compensator 41 includes an array waveguide grating 11 provided with an array waveguide 4 comprising a plurality of juxtaposed channel waveguides 4a having length different in a preset value to each other, and a phase distribution imparting part 7 to impart a setting phase distribution for generating wavelength dispersion to the array waveguide 4 of the array waveguide grating 11. When the number of channel waveguides of the array waveguide 4 is M (M is a positive integer) and the number of the channel waveguide given in the arrangement order of the channel waveguide 4a is k (k=0 to M-1), a setting phase distribution is made into an even function- distribution which forms a substantially line symmetry to the center (M-1)/2 of the channel waveguide number k.
