    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multimode interference waveguide type optical switch having wide tolerance for digital switching responding to an applied voltage or changes in a current. SOLUTION: The optical switch includes: an input single-mode waveguide 102 on which input light is made incident; a multimode rectangular slab waveguide 102 on which exiting light from the single-mode waveguide is made incident; two electrodes 105a, 105b disposed in parallel with the guiding direction on the slab waveguide and decreasing the refractive index of the slab waveguide 103 below the electrodes by applying an injection current or a voltage; and a plurality of output single-mode waveguides 104a, 104b on which the exiting light from the slab waveguide 103 is made incident and from which output light is emitted.     • PURPOSE:To obtain a small-sized light reflector which is easy to manufacture by providing a directional light coupler, a means that reflects waveguide light and a means that changes the refractive index of a light waveguide path. CONSTITUTION:A crystal of LiNbO3 having polished end face is used as a substrate 1, and three-dimensional light waveguide paths 2, 3 are formed by thermal diffusing Ti on this substrate 1. Ends 2a, 3a of these light waveguide paths 2, 3 are formed closely and parallelly to each other and constitute a directional light coupler 6. Light waveguide paths 2a, 2b extend to the end face of the substrate 1, and a reflecting film 4 is formed by vapor depositing Al on the end face. An electrode 5 made of vapor deposited Al is formed in a part of upper part of light waveguide paths 2a, 3a extending the whole length. Voltage from the outside is applied to this electrode 5.
