    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for converting a hydroxycarboxylic acid or a salt thereof into an unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or an ester thereof. SOLUTION: The process for converting a salt of a hydroxycarboxylic acid into an unsaturated carboxylic acid or an ester thereof comprises converting ammonium salt of the hydroxycarboxylic acid in an aqueous solution into a corresponding hydroxycarboxylic acid and an ammonium cation in the aqueous solution, and separating the ammonium cation from the aqueous solution while leaving the hydroxycarboxylic acid in the aqueous solution. In the converting and separating steps, a hydrophobic acid or an acidic ion exchange resin, each having an acid dissociation constant, namely a pKa, smaller than that of the salt of the hydroxycarboxylic acid by at least 0.5, is used. When a hydrophobic acid is used, this acid and a salt thereof are immiscible with water and the resultant multiphase solution comprises an aqueous phase containing the corresponding hydroxycarboxylic acid and a non-aqueous phase containing a neutralized acid. Alternatively, when an ion exchange resin is used, an aqueous solution of an ammonium salt of the hydroxycarboxylic acid is brought into contact with the resin, whereby the salt is converted into the hydroxycarboxylic acid and the ammonium cation is trapped on the resin. In either case, the aqueous solution is treated, for example, by heating to separate and recover the hydroxycarboxylic acid. The non-aqueous phase or the resin is treated for separating and recovering ammonia useful for preparing an additional ammonium salt of the hydroxycarboxylic acid. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
