    • PURPOSE:To enable mass production by using basically a drawing technique in the manufacture of a fiber. CONSTITUTION:A base material 8 for an optical fiber is polished to manufacture a semi-circular cylindrical bas material 11 contg. a core (SiO2-GeO2 glass) 9, and a hole 12 of a circular cylindrical shape is opened in a clad (pure silica) 10 apart from the core 9. Boron-doped silica glass 13 of a circular cylindrical shape is inserted into the hole 12, whereby a base material 14 for an isolator is obtd. The material 14 is drawn to form a fiber, which is etched by using an etchant such as HF-NH4F. The etching is completed at the point of the time when the fiber is etched down to the outside circumference of the core 9. A metallic film, i.e. aluminum 15 is deposited by evaporation around the etched fiber. The part succeeding the fiber deposited thereon with aluminum by evaporation (fiber type polarizer 16) is cut to 1cm length (1/4 of the beat length of the fiber), whereby the optical isolator for 1.3mum wavelength is obtd. as a fiber type phase plate 17.
