    • PURPOSE:To make the restoration of breakout possible with ease even under the production of ingots by making the endless belts of a titled device, more particularly, continuous casting devices, their guide roller guides and the guide tables on the outlet side of molds movable. CONSTITUTION:Rotary mold type continuous casting devices 1, 1 for casting two strands are provided with externally grooved casting rings 2, and endless belts 3 enclosing a part of the outside circumferences thereof, and moving in the same direction in synchronization with the revolutions of the wheels 2. Further, guide roller groups 4 for bringing the belts 3 into contact with the wheels 2 and guide tables 6 on the outlet sides of the molds 5 formed of the wheels 2 and the belts 3 are provided. The belts 3 and the rollers 4 are provided with belt tension devices 20. In the event of occurrence of breakout, the stand 21 of the device 20 is moved in parallel with the revolving shaft direction of the wheels 2 with a rod 33 as a guide by a side shifting cylinder 34 of the device 1 on the side where it occurs, so that the space in front of the wheels 2 is opened. Thereafter, with the table 6 held slightly lowered on a carriage 35, it is moved toward said open space and the knife 13 attached to the table 6 is exchanged.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for starting and stopping a horizontal casting machine, e.g. a caster for continuous casting of metal ingots.
      SOLUTION: The caster has a feed trough for carrying molten metal, at least one casting mold, and a connecting trough separately connecting each casting mold to the feed trough. A shutoff gate is associated with each connecting trough and movable between an open position and a closed position. Each connecting trough includes a drop-down portion located between the shutoff gate and the casting mold. The drop-down portion is adapted to swing downwardly and thereby the molten metal is rapidly drained from the connecting trough and an entrance of the mold. The apparatus also includes an elongated starter block, adapted to be inserted into the casting mold and having a threaded recess formed therein for receiving the molten metal. An O-ring is fitted to the starter block to seal the starter block against the casting mold.

    • PURPOSE:To form strong solid surface layers in a top part quickly by inserting a steel plate under the surface of molten steel upon ending of continuous casting and holding the steel plate until it is fixed by the solidified steel. CONSTITUTION:An immersion nozzle is removed upon ending of continuous casting, and the operator holds the handle 5 of a steel plate and inserts the plate into a casting mold from the short side 6 thereon so as to sink the plate slightly into molten steel 7 from the upper part 9 of meniscus. The steel plate is held level until the circumference of the body 1 thereof is restrained by the solidified shell in the casting mold. The molten steel overflows from the bottom surface of the steel plate onto the steel plate in this stage and melts the weld zone between the handle 5 and the body 1; therefore, the handle 5 is removable. Then, the solidified shell 8 formed upon cooling of the steel plate is formed around the steel plate, and the strong solid surface layers 1, 8 which prevent the outflow and bleeding of the molten steel are formed by the two.
