    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the image quality and function of an image pickup device using a multipixel CCD for both still pictures and moving pictures. SOLUTION: Each pixel e is provided with a color filter of any of RGB. Horizontal transfer paths CH1 and CH2 are provided under and on vertical transfer paths CV of a CCD 10. The vertical transfer paths CV can transfer signal charges vertically. The vertical transfer paths CV are grouped into a first column group I and a second column group II by gate electrodes. Each of the groups transfers the signal charges in reverse directions each other and reverses the transfer directions every field. Outputs of the lower and upper horizontal transfer paths CH1 and CH2 are used to be able to constitute an image with smears suppressed. A CPU drives the CCD 10 in an additional reading mode.       SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display 2 has a brightness control 6 for adjusting the brightness of a display 4. A brightness control system S comprises a computer 11 and a brightness difference measuring unit 12. The computer 11 displays gray images C1, C2 in two gradations, with the brightness control 6 being set to maximum. The brightness difference measuring unit 12 has two phototransistors 14 for measuring the values of brightness of the images C1, C2. The measuring unit 12 computes the difference between the measured values of brightness. The computer 11 stores the brightness difference, together with the value of the brightness control 6 then varies the control 6 step by step and repeats the same process, until the control 6 reaches a minimum. The computer 11 adjusts the control 6, so that the brightness difference becomes maximum, based on the stored data.
