SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display 2 has a brightness control 6 for adjusting the brightness of a display 4. A brightness control system S comprises a computer 11 and a brightness difference measuring unit 12. The computer 11 displays gray images C1, C2 in two gradations, with the brightness control 6 being set to maximum. The brightness difference measuring unit 12 has two phototransistors 14 for measuring the values of brightness of the images C1, C2. The measuring unit 12 computes the difference between the measured values of brightness. The computer 11 stores the brightness difference, together with the value of the brightness control 6 then varies the control 6 step by step and repeats the same process, until the control 6 reaches a minimum. The computer 11 adjusts the control 6, so that the brightness difference becomes maximum, based on the stored data.
