    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation method for a marine propulsion system, the method enabling securing of turning characteristics of a marine craft with simple control in a case where a failure in steering angle control occurs to a part of outboard engines.SOLUTION: Plural outboard engines are respectively provided with plural steering mechanisms, each of which includes: a hydraulic pump; an electric motor for driving the hydraulic pump; a hydraulic cylinder having two cylinder chambers compartmentalized by a piston; and a normal-close bypass valve for communicating two cylinder chambers of the hydraulic cylinder. In the case of determining that a failure has occurred to steering angle control of a part of the outboard engines, a main ECU 10 displays on a display device 9 an operation guiding screen for urging a craft operator to open the bypass valve of a steering mechanism corresponding to the failed outboard engine, and maintains power transmission between an engine and propeller of the failed outboard engine to be shut off.

The controller 6 executes turning control for controlling the turning mechanism 4 according to the steering angle θ. At activation, the controller 6 determines whether or not the phase of the steering angle θ and the turning angle δ is deviated. When the phase is deviated, the controller 6 delays the starting of the turning control until the deviation of the phase is eliminated by the operation of the steering wheel 5a.
