The focus error signal Se shown by the expression (1) is considered as a positive signal when the position of the signal face of a recording medium 7 is off from the focus position of a condenser lens 5, and considered as a negative signal when the position of signal face of the recording medium is nearer then the focus position of the condenser lens 5. By driving and controlling the condenser lens 5 by an actuator, good focus conditions can be obtained at all times.
