    • PURPOSE:To readily obtain the subject compounds useful as medicines, agricultural chemicals or raw materials for production thereof in high yield by reacting aromatic amides with a stoichiometric amount of a readily handleable tetraalkylammonium polyhalide as an oxidizing agent in a solvent at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:Aromatic amides, such as p-chlorobenzamide, in a solvent, such as water, are alkalified by preferably adding an alkali (earth) metal hydroxide, such as NaOH, to the solvent so as to readily advance reaction, then reacted in the presence of an oxidizing agent, such as a tetraalkylammonium polyhalide expressed by the formula (R1 is benzyl, phenyl or lower alkyl; R2 to R4 are lower alkyl; X is halogen), e.g. benzyltrimethylammonium tribromide, in an amount of 0.5-2mol based on 1mol aromatic amides at 5-100 deg.C for 0.3-15hr and subjected to the Hofmann degradation to afford the objective compounds, such as p-chloroaniline, useful as medicines, agricultural chemicals or raw materials for production thereof.

    • PURPOSE:To easily produce a lactone useful as a raw material for pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, etc., in high yield by using an easily handleable tetraalkylammonium polyhalide as an oxidizing agent and reacting a stoichiometric amount of the polyhalide with a diol at a specific temperature in a solvent. CONSTITUTION:A lactone such as gamma-butyrolactone or delta-butyrolactone useful as various pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals or their raw materials can be produced by reacting (A) 1mol of a diol such as 1,4-butanediol or 1, 5- pentanediol in a solvent (e. g. CCl4) in the presence of (B) 0.5-4 mol (preferably 0.8-3mol) of an oxidizing agent consisting of a tetraalkylammonium polyhalide of formula (R1 is benzyl, phenyl or lower alkyl; R2 to R4 are lower alkyl; x is halogen) (e. g. benzyltrimethylammonium tribromide) at 5-100 deg.C for 4-5hr while adding a buffer solution such as disodium phosphate to the system to improve the conversion and yield.
