The engine ECU 24 stops an engine 30 if it cannot receive the rolling code 2 within the predetermined time. A backup memory 24d in the engine ECU 24 stores the fact that the engine 30 is stopped. When the engine is starred next. time, transmission of the rolling code is carried out quickly. The transmission is also quickly carried out when a backup power source for the backup memory 24d is cut off.

After speed change commanding, an alteration of engine torque is started from time before inertia phase is started, and this altered quantity is set to the value different from the altered quantity in the inertia phase. With this constitution, the influence of variations in the engine torque is almost completely solvable, so that such a favorable speed change characteristic that is lens in variations is securable.

When a first speed change is a down shift and if a second speed change of an up shift is commanded before the first speed change is over, the control of engine torque for the first speed change is immediately stopped while the control of engine torque for the second speed change is carried out as soon as conditions are met.
