    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power transmission device to perform power transmission through a rolling contact of a troidal type CVT (a transmission with continuously variable gear ratio) whereby the area in the neighbourhood of the contacting point can be cooled efficiently.
      SOLUTION: The power transmission device includes a roller 16 which makes rolling contact both with an input and an output discs for performing power transmission between the two discs. The surface 22 of the roller 16 confronting the two discs includes an abutting part 24 as an area actually contacting with the discs and an adjacent part 26 adjoining the abutting part 24 and not contacting with the discs. The adjacent part 26 is furnished with grooves 28 stretching from near the abutting part 24 in the direction going apart therefrom. Along the grooves the lubricating oil near the abutting part 24 is exhausted, which assures an increase in the circulating amount of the lubricating oil and allows efficient performance of cooling with the lubricating oil.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a member having a high bearing pressure fatigue strength, which is manufactured more inexpensively than before, and to provide a manufacturing method therefor. SOLUTION: The member is made of an alloy steel containing 0.9-1.2% C and 0.3-1.5% Cr, and has Vickers hardness of 700-850 on the surface part and of 250-350 in the inner core part. The method for manufacturing the member comprises a precipitation step for precipitating fine precipitates, a normalizing step for controlling Vickers hardness to 250-350, and a surface layer hardening step for controlling the Vickers hardness of the surface layer in a range from the surface receiving high bearing pressure to at least 1.5 times deeper part than the distance between the surface and a portion of producing the maximum shearing stress amplitude, to 700-850.       SOLUTION: The power transmission device includes a roller 16 which makes rolling contact both with an input and an output discs for performing power transmission between the two discs. The surface 22 of the roller 16 confronting the two discs has a contacting part 26 which contacts actually with the input and output discs for performing power transmission. The width B of the surface 24 exceeds three times as large as the width 2b of the contacting part 26. This lessens the influence of the end face upon the internal shearing stress generated in the neighnourhodd of the contacting part to drop the stress. This drop of the stress lessens the amount of heat emission. The heat capacity of the roller 16 can be made greater by enlarging the width B of the confronting surface, and also the area of heat emission is widened. The drop of stress and the drop in temperature result in enhancement of the durability.
