SOLUTION: A harmful gas removing material having a photocatalyst for oxidizing, immobilizing, and removing nitrogen monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide in the surface layer is installed in a wall face and a floor face of a construction and a road, so as to remove harmful gases in the atmosphere. Function deterioration of the harmful gas removing material with the lapse of time can be prevented by sprinkling water and washing the surface of the harmful gas removing material. The water used for washing is again used for sprinkling and washing the surface of the harmful gas removing material, after nitric acid and nitrous acid contained therein are removed by absorption or decomposition function of plants or soil. 摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain more efficient catalytic reaction relating to a photocatalyst. SOLUTION: In a compounded state of titanium dioxide as a photocatalyst with an amphoteric metal oxide having a basic point (alumina or the like) or a basic metal oxide (barium oxide, strontium oxide or the like), when nitrogen oxide (nitrogen monoxide) is in contact with or near the titanium oxide, the nitrogen monoxide is oxidized into nitrogen dioxide (gas) by .OH which is the active oxygen radical produced by the titanium dioxide by irradiation of light. The nitrogen dioxide is an acidic gas because of its molecular structure. The alumina is an amphoteric metal oxide and barium oxide or strontium oxide are basic metal oxides. The oxygen atoms of these compds. act as a basic point for the acidic gas, and therefore, nitrogen dioxide is withdrawn to the oxygen atoms and chemically bonded and held by the metal oxides. Thus, the nitrogen oxide remains near the titanium dioxide as a photocatalyst.

(e.g. silica) capable of adsorbing hydroxyl groups on the surface of a substrate (e.g. a tile). In the surface layer, hydroxyl radicals.OH generated by titania under the irradiation with ultraviolet rays reach the surface and are chemically adsorbed as hydroxyl groups to the surface. Thus, hydroxyl groups generated by titania can be chemically adsorbed to and retained at the surface of silica more effectively in a high density. The existence of hydroxyl groups realizes a high hydrophilicity.

SOLUTION: A photocatalyst film 3 containing a semiconductor oxide 1 such as a titanium oxide and an insulant oxide 2 is formed on the surface of a base 3 to provide the superior adhering stain-removing properties. Namely, a solution containing a titanium alkoxide as a kind of metal alkoxide is used as a film manufacturing raw material, and the solution is provided on the surface of the base 3, and titanium alkoxide is heat decomposed and polymerized (alcohol removing reaction) by the heat on the surface of the base or the heat from the low temperature heat treatment of the base, and a titanium oxide film is formed on the surface of the base, and the film is formed as an adhering stain-removing photocatalyst film of high stain proofness. At this time, the contact angle of water on the surface of the photocatalyst film photo-excited adhering stain removing properties is set larger in the range of 5-30 deg. than the contact angle of water before the photo-excitation.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form the photocatalyst thin film exhibiting excellent fouling preventive activity and superior durability by placing a titanium alkoxide solution on the surface of a base material and heating the titanium alkoxide to subject it to thermal decomposition and polymerization to obtain a titanium oxide thin film formed on the base material. SOLUTION: The formation of this photocatalyst thin film comprises: diluting a titanium alkoxide preferably such as titanium tetraisopropoxide, with ethanol or the like, to obtain a solution having an about 0.5 to 20 wt.% alkoxide concn.; vaporizing this solution to generate a vapor; spraying the surface of a base material with the vapor directly or with a gaseous mixture of the vapor and an appropriate carrier gas, wherein the surface of the base material is heated to about 50 to 600 deg.C beforehand; and subjecting a part or the whole of titanium alkoxide placed on the surface of the base material to decomposition and polymerization with heat of the surface of the base material to form a titanium oxide thin film. Thus, the objective photocatalyst thin film having high smoothness, high hardness, hydrophilicity-enhancing properties effected by photoexcitation and organic matter decomposition activity, can be formed on the surface of the base material.
