      SOLUTION: The water heater is equipped with a reheating circuit 53 for circulating hot water of a hot water storage tank 17 in a reheating circulation passage 53a and reheating bath water by a reheating heat exchanger 44, and a boiling-up circuit 70 for circulating the water of the hot water storage tank 17 in the boiling-up circulation passage 70a and boiling up the hot water by the heat pump unit 75. The reheating circuit 53 and the boiling-up circuit 70 merge at a merging part 73, and hot water is returned to the hot water storage tank 17 from one of a plurality of intake passages 52 via a switching valve 48. During a defrosting operation or an anti-freezing operation, the inlet side of the switching valve 48 is closed, and the hot water of the hot water storage tank 17 taken into the reheating circuit 53 is returned to the hot water storage tank 17 through the confluence 73 and the boiling-up circuit 70. The heat pump unit 75 is defrosted by using heat of the hot water in the hot water storage tank 17. The hot water in the hot water storage tank 17 is replaced with water in the boiling-up circulation passage 70a, and freezing in the boiling-up circulation passage 70a is prevented.

      SOLUTION: Connection passages 20, 21, 22 are connected to a hot water tank 16 at a plurality of different height positions, and a connection is switched to one of the connection passages 20, 21, 22 by a connection passage switch means 30. During a defrosting operation, the connection is switched to one of the connection passages 20, 21, 22 by the connection passage switch means 30 according to detection of the temperature of the hot water at the plurality of different height positions of the hot water tank 16. The hot water in the hot water tank 16 is taken out through the one of the connection passages 20, 21, 22 switched. The hot water taken out is passed through a heat exchanger 41 and returned to the bottom of the hot water tank 16. The hot water is taken out from a certain height position of the hot water tank 16 and used for the defrosting operation. Medium temperature water remaining in the hot water tank 16 is taken out and the heat of the medium temperature water is used effectively for the defrosting operation. By taking out the medium temperature water and using it for the defrosting operation, the temperature of the medium temperature water is lowered and the boiling efficiency of the heat pump unit 40 is increased for subsequent boiling.

The connection of the water supply passage 18 and the circulation passage 24 for boiling-up through the connection passage 38 is blocked by the switch valve 37 in a state that the hot water storage tank 17 is filled with the water, and the water is supplied from the water supply pipe 18 to a lower portion of the hot water storage tank 17. Accordingly, the special air-bleeding work is unnecessary, and the air-bleeding of the circulation passage 24 for boiling-up and the heat exchanger 32 and the pump 33 of the heat pump unit 31 disposed in the circulation passage 24 for boiling-up can be performed only by supplying the water from the water supply passage 18.
