    • PURPOSE: To obtain a compound useful as a substitute for bisphenol A in a short time in high yield, by reacting phenol with a sulfonating agent in the presence of a compound selected from Zn compound, Fe compound and Mg compound.
      CONSTITUTION: Phenol is reacted with a sulfonating agent (e.g., conc. sulfuric acid, fuming sulfuric acid, sulfuric anhydride, etc.) or phenolsulfonic acid, to give dihydroxydiphenylsulfone. In the reaction, at least one compound selected from the group consisting of zinc compound, iron compound, magnesium compound, boron compound, and phosphorus compound (e.g., halide, sulfide, oxide, hydroxide, etc. of Zn) as a catalyst is added to the reaction system. A condensation reaction through dehydration is not preceded substantially when the reaction temperature is below 140°C, and side reactions occur actively when the reaction temperature is ≥250°C. The use of the catalyst reduces the content of by-products and precedes the condensation reaction through dehydration.

    • PURPOSE: To obtain the titled pure compound having a high transparency, by dissolving dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone (bisphenol-S) containing a colored substance in a solvent, decoloring the dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone with a reducing agent, and using preferably a sequestering agent.
      CONSTITUTION: Dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone (hereinafter abbreviated to bisphenol- S) containing an impurity, particularly a colored substance, is dissolved in a solvent, e.g. methyl alcohol, formic acid or acetone, and the resultant solution is then decolored with a reducing agent, e.g. sodium dithionite or thiourea dioxide. In the process, a sequestering agent, e.g. nitrilotriacetic acid or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, is preferably used, and formed crystals are separated under ordinary pressure to give the aimed substance. The amount of the reducing agent is 0.1W5wt% based on the weight of the bisphenol-S, and the amount of the sequestering agent is 0.01W 1.0wt% based on the weight of the bisphenol-S.

    • PURPOSE: To obtain a compound useful as a substitute for bisphenol A in high purity and in high yield, by using a mixed solvent of an alcohol and o-dichlorobenzene in a specific ratio from a mixture of dihydroxydiphenylsulfone isomers.
      CONSTITUTION: 4,4'-Dihydroxydiphenylsulfone is isolated from a mixture of isomers of 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenylsulfone and 2,4'-dihydroxydiphenylsulfone. The mixture of the isomers is treated with a mixed solvent comprising 1W10wt% one or more alcohols selected from the group consisting of methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, and iso-propanol and 99W90wt% o-dichlorobenzene so that the isomers are separated. The separation is carried out by using a relatively inexpensive and industrially sufficiently usable solvent, and the operation in separation and purification is simple. The separation is done at room temperature so that it is industrially advantageous.

    • PURPOSE: To obtain the titled dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone (bisphenol-S) useful as a raw material for a synthetic resin in high purity, by treating 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone containing a colored substance with an inorganic peroxide.
      CONSTITUTION: 4,4'-Dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone (bisphenol-S) containing a colored substance is dissolved in an alkaline aqueous solution, and an inorganic peroxide is then added to decolor the solution. Formed crystals are then separated to give the bisphenol-S having a high degree of whiteness. Hydrogen peroxide, sodium perborate, etc. may be cited as the inorganic peroxide, and the amount thereof is 0.1W 5wt% based on the weight of the bisphenol-S. The use of a sequestering agent, e.g. EDTA, in addition to the inorganic peroxide further improves the decoloring effect.
