    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a PBI molding which is as excellent as unpretreated PBI powder in moldability and has stable quality.
      SOLUTION: A method for producing a polybenzimidazole molding comprises a packing process in which the PBI powder after being neutralized and washed is dried under reduced pressure while being vibrated, and the dried powder is charged into the cavity of a mold heated in advance at room temperature or above, a preheating process in which a primary pressure is applied to the mold to reduce the volume of the packed powder, and the powder is heated at 100°C or above and below the secondary transition point of the resin, a heating process in which the temperature of the powder is kept, a secondary pressure equal to or greater than the primary pressure is applied for a prescribed time, and the powder is heated at the secondary transition point of the PBI resin or above under the primary pressure, a heating pressurization process in which a ternary pressure is applied for a prescribed time while the temperature of the heating process is kept, and a temperature and pressure decreasing process in which the temperature of the cavity of the mold is decreased continuously, and the ternary pressure is decreased stepwise after the temperature decrease is started.

    • PURPOSE: To obtain a compound useful as a substitute for bisphenol A in a short time in high yield, by reacting phenol with a sulfonating agent in the presence of a compound selected from Zn compound, Fe compound and Mg compound.
      CONSTITUTION: Phenol is reacted with a sulfonating agent (e.g., conc. sulfuric acid, fuming sulfuric acid, sulfuric anhydride, etc.) or phenolsulfonic acid, to give dihydroxydiphenylsulfone. In the reaction, at least one compound selected from the group consisting of zinc compound, iron compound, magnesium compound, boron compound, and phosphorus compound (e.g., halide, sulfide, oxide, hydroxide, etc. of Zn) as a catalyst is added to the reaction system. A condensation reaction through dehydration is not preceded substantially when the reaction temperature is below 140°C, and side reactions occur actively when the reaction temperature is ≥250°C. The use of the catalyst reduces the content of by-products and precedes the condensation reaction through dehydration.

    • PURPOSE: To separate 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone useful as a raw material for a synthetic resin in high purity by an easy operation, by treating an isomeric mixture of dihydroxydiphenyl sulfones inexpensive phenol.
      CONSTITUTION: An isomeric mixture of 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone with 2,4'- dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone is wholly dissolved in phenol, and the resultant solution is then cooled to crystallize only the 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone as its adduct with the phenol, which is then separated by the filtration, etc. The resultant adduct directly or in an aqueous solution is heat-treated to give the aimed 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone of high purity easily. The phenol used for the separation is directly usable as a reaction raw material for the dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone.
