SOLUTION: A device sets an LC resonance frequency determined by the inductance L2 on the secondary side 1b of an ignition coil and the stray capacity C2 formed in an ion current route so that it is deviated from a knock frequency so as to detect only a knock frequency component accurately from an ion current output. Also the inductance L2 should be desirably set at an large value to set the LC resonance frequency smaller than the knock frequency in order to increase an ignitability in addition to a knock detectability. In addition, an LC resonance frequency should be desirably set smaller than a low range cut-off frequency of a band pass filter for knock signal extraction which is installed in a process circuit 20 so that the LC resonance frequency component causing noise can be removed more securely.

SOLUTION: Since the stray capacity 43 exists on a high voltage cord 42 for connecting a secondary coil 26 of an ignition coil 21 and an ignition plug 27 to each other and the secondary coil 26 of the ignition coil 21, an LCR resonance circuit is formed of the stray capacity 43, the secondary coil 26 and an ionic current detecting resistor 31, and resonance waveform (remanent magnetic noise) is generated by remanent magnetic energy on the secondary side of the ignition coil 26 just after spark discharge of the ignition plug 27. Q of the LCR resonance circuit is so constituted as to be in the range of 0.5 to 3.0, preferably, in the range of 0.6 to 2.0 in order to decrease the effect of the remanent magnetic noise. Therefore, the remanent magnetism vibrating time becomes the target value (about 0.8 ms) or less, and the remanent magnetic noise can be quickly damped.

SOLUTION: An ion current output detected through an ion current detecting circuit 10 and a reverse amplification circuit 20 is masked by a masking circuit 30 till a fixed time elapses after the end of a discharge, and a noise produced after the end of discharge is thereby completely removed. BPF 41 extracts a knocking frequency component from the output of the masking circuit 30, and an integrating circuit 42 integrates the output of the BPF 41 during a gate term. CPU 43 learns the start time of a gate term according to the variation of the end time of the masking term so that the start time of the gate term may be delayed than the end time of the masking term. As a result, the influence of the noise caused by the discontinuity of a signal accompanying with mask-releasing can be removed.

Therefore, the generating section of remanent magnetic noise can be made one shot, and ionic current IION can be reliably detected also in the high rotation range of an internal combustion engine.

This multiple discharge (the ON/OFF of the power transistor) is carried out until the crank angle comes to a preset specific angle (Step 105), and the ON/OFF of the power transistor is stopped to stop the multiple discharge, when the crank angle comes to the fixed angle. On the other hand, when the engine rotational frequency is in a high rotation area higher than the set rotation number, the multiple discharge is not carried out (Step 102 and 103).

A noise in the mask releasing is completely removed by setting a gate period in a peak-holding circuit 24 with small time-lag relating to the masking releasing time. The second signal to release masking in the timing after the lapse of a fixed time when convergence of an LC resonance noise is found from a spark discharge finish timing is provided as a masking signal to designate a masking period in addition to a signal to release masking at a fixed crank angle, and masking is released only after both of the masking signals are released.

SOLUTION: An iron current detecting circuit 10 and a reverse amplification circuit 20 are provided, and the output of the reverse amplification circuit 20 is taken in a CPU 43 through a master circuit 30, a band pass filter 41, and an integrating circuit 42. The output of a vibration sensor 46 installed on a cylinder block is taken in the CPU 43 through a peak hold circuit 47. Normally, iron current generated when mixture in a combustion chamber is burnt is detected, and generation of knocking is judged. When the internal combustion engine is provided in a high rotating speed operation region in which it is difficult to extract knocking vibration composition from the ion current signal due to generation of noise by LC resonance in an ion current passage, vibration of the cylinder block is detected, and generation of knocking is judged.
