    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric power steering device capable of returning to the steering assist control based upon the steering torque when a failure etc. is eliminated even if the steering assist control is stopped based upon the steering torque owing to a temporary failure.
      SOLUTION: The electric power steering device is composed of a first and a second sensor to emit signals according to the rotating angles of the input shaft 32 and output shaft 33 of a steering shaft 3, a first and a second rotating angle sensing part to sense the rotating angles of the input 32 and output shafts 33 to work with the sensing results of the sensors, a torque sensing part to sense the steering torque generated on the steering shaft 3 using the sensing result of the rotating angle sensing parts, and a control unit 20 to make drive control of an electric motor 6 in accordance with the sensing result of these sensing parts. The operation is made in changing-over between two modes, the first assist mode in which a steering assist is made by the motor 6 using the sensed value of the steering torque made by the control unit 20 and the second assist mode in which the steering assist is conducted by the motor using the sensed value of the rotating angle given by one of the first and second rotating angle sensing parts.

SOLUTION: This electric power steering device for determining a desired value of motor current for a steering force assist motor 24 in accordance with a value detected by a torque sensor 10 detecting a steering torque applied to a steering wheel (which is not shown) and a frictional coefficient between steered wheels and a road surface, and for rotating the motor 24 so as to set the motor current to the desired value in order to assist in steering force, comprises a brushless motor as the motor 24, a steering speed calculating means 12 for calculating a steering speed of the steering wheel from a value detected by a rotor position detector 14 for detecting a position of a rotor in the bushless motor 24, a torque variation calculating means 12 for calculating a variation in torque from a value detected by the torque sensor 10, and a means 12 for obtaining the friction coefficient from the steering speed and the torque variation.
