摘要： PURPOSE:To obtain a new compound useful as a liquid crystal component having a low viscosity, high physicochemical stability and a stable nematic phase. CONSTITUTION:This compound is expressed by formula I [R is 1-10C alkyl; Q is single bond, ether bond, carboxylic acid ester bond, etc.; rings A and B are benzene or cyclohexyl ring; X and Y are single bond, methylenoxy bond, oxymethylene bond, etc.; (m) and (n) are 0-2]. The compound is obtained by catalytically reducing a compound expressed by formula II in the presence of magnesium oxide, etc., in an inert solvent such as methanol. The compound expressed by formula I is one component useful for preparing liquid crystal compositions used in a liquid crystal flat panel display, etc., good in compatibility with many other liquid crystal compounds and capable of increasing the N-I point or improving other physical properties by adding thereof to the liquid crystal compositions containing the liquid crystal compounds.

摘要： PURPOSE:To obtain a new compound, useful as a component of a liquid crystal composition used for a liquid crystal flat panel display, etc., having high physico- chemical stability and capable of manifesting a stable nematic phase. CONSTITUTION:This compound is expressed by formula I [R is 1-14C alkyl which may be substituted; R and R are H, halogen, etc.; Q is single bond, ether bond, etc.; rings A and B are expressed by formulas II, III, etc., X and Y are single bond, methylenoxy bond, etc.; the double line of a solid line and a broken line is single or double bond; (m) and (n) are 0-2, with the proviso that both are not simultaneously 0; at least one of Q and X is single bond when (m) is 0; at least one of X and Y is single bond when (n) is 0], e.g. a compound expressed by formula IV. The compound is obtained by condensing a compound of a skeletal component expressed by formula V with a phenolic compound expressed by formula VI in the presence a condensing agent such as triphenylphosphine. Furthermore, the phenolic compound expressed by formula VI is obtained by using, e.g. 2-cyano-6-methoxy-1-tetralone as a starting raw material.

The compound can be produced by the condensation reaction of (A) an alcoholic component compound or its active derivative as a skeleton component of formula VI or a carboxylic acid compound or its active derivative as a skeleton component of formula VII with (B) a phenolic compound of formula VIII.

SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device having a plurality of thin film transistors consists of a pair of substrates, a liquid crystal layer held between the substrates, an electrode structure formed on at least one of the paired substrates to generate electric fields having a dominantly parallel component to the substrate in the liquid crystal layer, a nonconductive layer in contact with the liquid crystal layer, and a color filter 17 formed on the nonconductive layer. The interface of the nonconductive layer in contact with the color filter 17 has an effect to flatten the color filter 17 while the other interface in contact with the liquid crystal layer has an effect to control the alignment of the liquid crystal in the liquid crystal layer.

The ratio between the minor axes of the polarization rate is nearly determined by the structure of the skeleton section of the liquid crystal molecules.

The important requirement for said medium to exhibit the large nonlinear optical constant is that a pi electron conjugation system exists in the skeleton thereof and that the medium has an electron-donating group and electron- withdrawing group as a substituent. Such a molecular structure which has large cohesive energy at the time of forming crystals and has a small entropy increase at the time of fusionis selected in order to have the thermal stability, e.g., high m.p. These act effectively on each other with the fluorenone and the deriv. thereof. The nonlinear optical performance and thermal stability are thereby improved.
