      SOLUTION: The sintered compact contains cubic crystal sialon having cubic crystal structure, and in addition to the cubic crystal sialon, contains one or more kinds of: an oxide of at least one kind of element selected from silicon, magnesium, aluminum and the group 3 elements; nitrides of the elements; and oxynitrides of the elements. The oxide of at least one kind of element selected from silicon, magnesium, aluminum and the group 3 elements, nitrides of the elements and oxynitrides of the elements are present as a bonding phase in the sintered compact and the sintered compact containing these has excellent hardness and toughness.
