SOLUTION: A compound electrooptic material 30 of the present invention has, on a display surface S, a region that a liquid crystal material 33 occupies and a region that a non-liquid-crystal material (base material) 31 occupies. In this constitution, the regions which differ in refractive index are both made present to obtain a gradient-index spatial structure. Consequently, a light reflection type display element can be constituted without requiring a polarizer. Further, the region that the liquid crystal material 33 occupies is distributed and arranged in the region that the base material 31 occupies and then the total volume of the liquid crystal material 33 on the display surface S can be dispersed.
