    • PURPOSE:To allow a damping force in only one direction to be varied by varying magnetic field strength in a clearance between a piston portion and a rod pipe having a check valve. CONSTITUTION:A piston 3 fitted about a hollow piston rod 2 at the end thereof is slidably fitted into a damper case 4 enclosing magnetic fluid therein. A hollow rod 11 projecting into the damper case 4 in inserted into a hollow portion 2a of the piston rod 2, and there is defined a clearance 12 between the rod pipe 11 and a reduced diametrical shoulder 3a of the piston 3. Magnetic circuit provided with an electromagnetic coil 13 at its part is formed among the damper case 4, the piston 3 and the rod pipe 11. Further, a check valve 16 is mounted in an oil passage 15 leading to the rod pipe 11 provided in the damper case 4.

    • PURPOSE:To allow a damping force to be varied by varying a magnetic field strength in a clearance between a piston portion and a rod, which clearance communicating a lower oil chamber of a damper case enclosing magnetic fluid therein with an upper oil chamber thereof, and thereby varying viscosity of the magnetic fluid. CONSTITUTION:A piston 3 having valving mechanisms 9 and 10 at an end of a hollow piston rod 2 is slidably fitted into a damper case 4 enclosing magnetic fluid therein. A rod 11 projecting into the damper case 4 is inserted into a hollow portion 2a of the piston rod 2, and there is defined a clearance 12 between the rod 11 and a reduced diametrical shoulder 3a of the piston 3. Magnetic circuit is formed among the damper case 4, the piston 3 and the rod 11, and an electromagnetic coil 13 is provided in a part of the magnetic circuit. With this arrangement, a magnetic field strength in the clearance 12 between the piston portion 3a and the rod 11 is allowed to be varied by varying electric current flowing into the electromagnetic coil 13.

Also, since the hydraulic oil is partially sealed in only the inner cylinder 2 the unit can be made lighter.
