      CONSTITUTION: In case of collision against an obstacle, due to abnormal rise of the pressure in the first chamber 23 caused by impulse force, an absorber valve 27 is opened, and oil in said chamber 23 is transferred into the second chamber 24, then a piston rod 21 is extended from a cylinder 20, further an outboard machine 10 jumps up, and impulse force is absorbed. After release of the impulse force, when the pressure in the chamber 24 rises due to the dead weight of the outboard machine 10, oil in the chamber 24 is transferred into the chamber 23 through the second and the first check valves 32, 31 to contract the piston rod 21 toward the cylinder 20, the outboard machine 10 being returned to a down position before its jumping up.

    • PURPOSE:To prevent the suction of external air and enable complete draining, by connecting the pump-side end of a suction passage with a drain port which is located under water when an outboard motor is tilted down and which is located below a pump when the motor is tilted up. CONSTITUTION:A water pump 23 is provided at the halfway part of the drive shaft of an outboard motor 1. Cooling water sucked into a suction passage 18 through a water inlet cover 21 having numerous water intake holes 22 is supplied to an engine through a water tube 82 and drained through a communication recess 19, a drain passage 37 and a drain port 38. The drain port 38 is placed in a fore position as to the direction of proceeding of the boat. The drain port 38 is submerged wen the outboard motor 1 is tilted down. For that reason, external air is not sucked through the drain port 38. When the outboard motor 1 is tilted up, the drain port 38 is located below the pump 23 so that water in the communication recess 19 and a pump chamber 26 is all drained through the port.

      CONSTITUTION: When an obstacle collides against a propelling unit 15 during sailing astern in a condition of its being maintained in any up position, a great compressive force acts on a piston rod 19 of a tilt cylinder 18 and a position rod 27 of a trim cylinder 26, and the pressure in each lower chamber 22, 30 of each cylinder 18, 26 is raised abnormally. In this case, a relief valve 59 for a lower chamber is opened to let flow the hydraulic oil in each chamber 22, 30, raised in pressure, into a reservoir 31, and each chamber 22, 30 can be prevented from damages.

    • PURPOSE:To make the quick engagement and disengagement operations of a dog clutch possible by a method wherein a means for accelerating a movable dog in the direction out of the position in a transitional stage, in which the retention of the neutral state of the dog clutch is released, is provided. CONSTITUTION:When a driver 42 is pivoted, a follower 32 is shifted axially in a straight line within an output shaft 12 in order to shift a clutch 21 through a pin 29 in the rectilinear direction. At the neutral position, balls 52 engage the output shaft 12 with the follower 32 in order to display the detent function. However, when the follower 32 starts to shift itself in respect to the output shaft 12, the forces acting on balls 51 normal to the axis line energize the follower 32 quickly in the direction of the axis line in cooperation with the slant face of the output shaft 12, due to the energizing force of a spring 56 acting through a ball 55 to the balls 51. Consequently, the clutch 21 is quickly brought into engagement with transmission elements loosely fitted onto the output shaft 12.

    • PURPOSE: To enable a boat of running reversely in the shallows by providing the first and second check valves which change over the tansferred state of working oil between two chambers of a swivel bracket turning cylinder and making the check valves changeable in their motions as that one is opened while the other is closed, or both are closed.
      CONSTITUTION: The first chamber 23 and the second chamber 24B inside a cylinder 20 which turns a swivel bracket are capable of being communicated to each other by a bypass passage 32 bypassing a main piston 22. The bypass passage 32 has the first and second check valves 33 and 34 which are arranged reversely to each other in the series relation. At the reverse locking time of a propelling unit which is opened and closed via a cam 36 by the action of a sift lever 35, the unit closes the valve 33 and opens the valve 34. At the tilt-up time of the propelling unit, or at the time of forward run of a boat in the shallows, the unit opens the valve 33 and closes the valve 34. For the forward and rearward run of the propelling unit in the shallows, the unit closes both the valves 33 and 34 to perform their checking functions.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain increased transfer torque by installing an intermediate level gear, which is integrated into a part with a propeller shaft and is supported by a supporting arm arranged in the direction of crossing, between the driving bevel gear of a motor output shaft and a bevel gear fixed in a housing. CONSTITUTION:A driving bevel gear 24 fixed to the output shaft 20 of a motor 17 is supported by a bearing part 25A. Facing the gear 24, a fixed gear 26 having the same number of teeth as that of the gear 24 is fixed within a housing 16C. A propeller shaft 18 is supported between the center holes of both bevel gears 24 and 26 in a rotatable manner. A supporting arm 27 is installed which is crossing the propeller shaft 18 as its middle and is integrated into a part with it. A pair of bevel gears 28, which are supported by the arm 27 in a rotatable manner, are installed between both bevel gears 24 and 26 so that they are engaged with each other. With this contrivance, wthout enlarging the housing size, the reduction ratio of the gear reduction unit can be made 2, thereby increasing the transfer torque to the propeller shaft.

That is, each cylinder is positioned to a level suitable for maintenance, while a distance between a stern panel 12 and the center of gravity of the propelling unit 17 is decreased by forming the clamping bracket 13 to a small size, and the intrusion of the propelling unit 17 into the side of a ship body 11 at tilt up time of said unit 17 can be suppressed without causing the worsening of sailing performance.

    • PURPOSE: To prevent a key, transmitting the rotary force between a bushing of impeller and a pump drive shaft, from wear by such a special construction that the relative motion between the bushing and shaft is canceled.
      CONSTITUTION: A pump drive shaft 14 is provided with a key seat 72 cut with a plane in parallel with the tangential and axial lines of the shaft 14, and a bushing 52 is, in its internal surface, provided with an arc-shaped concave 74 having a smaller radius than the drive shaft 14 stretched long in the axial direction. Between the key seat 72 and concave 74 is fitted a tangential key 70 long in axial direction and half-moon shaped in profile, whose radius is such as to slide on the curvature of the concave 74 closely. Accordingly, when the impeller, not illustrated, rotates, the key 70 will bite into the gap between the key seat 72 and concave 74 as a wedge to couple bushing 52 and shaft 14 firmly. Consequently, water will not flow into or out of the gap between bushing 52 and shaft 14, that is likely when impeller rotates in a conventional arrangement, and the wear owing to sand or mud included in the water can be remarkably reduced.

Here a pressure rise of the chamber 23 opens the third check valve 37 and then opens a return valve 38. An opening condition of the valve 38 lasts for a certain time, after release of shocking force, if pressure of the second chamber rises by empty weight of the engine 10, oil is transferred to the first chamber through the valve 38 to hold the engine to a down position. At shallow water sailing, the engine 10 is set by a pin 18 to an optional position, and oil in the first chamber is transferred to the second chamber through a valve 33 to regulate pressure applied to a valve 28.
