    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surge current detection device which can be mounted easily in a conductor and accurately detects a surge current entering the conductor.SOLUTION: A surge current detection device 30 is mounted freely removable with respect to a conductor 11 and configured to detect a surge current entering the conductor 11. The surge current detection device 30 comprises a holder 40, a magnetic force centralizing member 60 of which the cross section is U-shaped approximately, and a magnetic substance sheet 70. The holder 40 holds the conductor 11 freely removably by means of first and second confronted holder bodies 40-1 and 40-2. The magnetic force centralizing member 60 is fixed inside the holder 40 and centralizes a line of magnetic force forming a magnetic field generated by the surge current entering the conductor 11 into a predetermined detection area with high density. The magnetic substance sheet 70 is fixed inside the holder 40 so as to be positioned in the detection area and detects the surge current.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect a surge current penetrating for a short time of time. SOLUTION: A protection element (such as an arrester 12) protects an apparatus 25 to be protected from surge currents i penetrating into line terminals L1, L2 or a grounding terminal E. Surge current detection devices 30-1 to 30-3 are provided on respective conductors 11-2, 11-3, 11-5 connected to the arrester 12. Each of the surge current detection devices 30-1 to 30-3 includes a magnetic flux concentration member 40 by which a magnetic flux produced by the penetrating surge current i is concentrated in a given detection area in high density, and a magnetic material sheet 50 positioned on the given detection area. The magnetic material sheet 50 includes a recording layer capable of recording and erasing the penetration state about the surge current i. A plurality of microcapsules, in which magnetic particles varying their magnetic orientation by a concentrated magnetic flux are sealed in a state suspended in a liquid, are arranged in the recording layer having a structure visually recognizable from outside.
