    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting system for a flat-plate display device capable of efficiently separating and irradiating specific polarization components without using a collimation means. SOLUTION: The lighting system for the flat-plate display device includes an upper layer made of an optical anisotropic matter on a top face of a light guide plate made of an optical isotropic matter. A micro-lens array is preferred to be fitted at an interface between the light guide plate and the upper layer. Or, a light irradiation layer containing a matrix consisting of the optical isotropic matter and a plurality of polarization sensitive scattering materials (PSSE) dispersed in it may be formed on the top face of the light guide plate. Specific polarization components are selectively scattered at an interface between the light guide plate and the upper layer, or at an interface between the matrix and the PSSE. On the other hand, the rest of the polarization components totally reflect at the top face of the upper layer or the light irradiation layer and return to the inside of the light guide plate.
