Driving each distance sensor 6, a sensor driving part 7 measures the distance to an object and sends out the result of measurement to a parameter extracting part 8, which extracts and computes feature uariable parameters required for each sort of judgement from the data on the measured distance. A recognition judging part 9 executes judgement as to the object according to a request signal from a control part 11. Presupposing that an apparatus has a function of judging and specifying a user and putting the apparatus in a prescribed state only when the user is judged and specified, the correctness of the result of judgement and specification is checked up, and when an error of the result of determination is recognized, a quick and automatic return from the prescribed state to the original state is made, so as to attain recovery from a false operation due to the false determination.
