    • PURPOSE:To observe simultaneously both end faces of optical fibers facing each other, by forming mirror faces in the end part of a butting rod in two directions facing each other at about 45 deg. to the axis of the butting rod. CONSTITUTION:Optical fibers 1 and 1' are brought into contact with both side faces of a butting rod 9 where mirror faces 10 and 10' are formed in two directions facing each other at 45 deg. and optical fibers 1 and 1' are positioned. Thereafter, the butting rod 9 is allowed to fall, and mirror faces 10 and 10' are placed between end faces of optical fibers 1 and 1'. When they are observed by a microscope 4 provided above the butting rod 9, side faces 12 and 12' of optical fibers 1 and 1' and images 11 and 11' of end faces of optical fibers 1 and 1' projected to mirror faces 10 and 10' are observed in the visual field. In this case, lengths l and l' from the center of the visual field to images 11 and 11' are measured and are compared with each other to discriminate whether they are equal to each other, thereby confirming whether optical fibers 1 and 1' are shifted axially or not.

    • PURPOSE:To execute exactly and easily positioning of an optical fiber by providing an auxiliary groove so as to cross a positioning groove of a jig body, and fitting a holding member into the auxiliary groove. CONSTITUTION:An auxiliary groove 12 is provided so as to cross a V-shaped positioning groove 11 of a jig body 1, and a plate-like holding member 14 is fitted into this groove so as to be inserted and drawn out freely. The member 14 is fitted so as to be slidable to a supporting frame 15 through a spring 16, and the supporting frame 15 is attahced pivotally to the tip of a rocking arm 17. When the holding member 14 is inserted from the upper part, it is made to press-contact with just the upper face of an optical fiber (a) in a state that its holding face 13 reaches the bottom of the positioning groove 11. Therefore, the holding face 13 can be made sufficiently longer than the diameter of the optical fiber (a), the fiber (a) is not detached from the holding face 13, and the positioning can be executed exactly and easily.

    • PURPOSE:To improve the strength in the juncture of optical fibers to be connected by arc welding and to decrease light loss by heating the end parts of the optical fibers to the m.p. thereof or below, and cleaning the fibers by removing the org. materials and moisture sticking on the surfaces thereof then arc welding the end parts. CONSTITUTION:The optical fibers 2 having optical fiber cores 1 to be connected by arc welding are set in a V-groove 4, and the forward end parts thereof are heated to the m.p. of the optical fiber glass or below by a heater 6 for preliminary heating. The org. materials remaining on the surfaces of the fibers 2 without stripping, for example, coatings, etc. are removed and moisture is removed as well to clean the surfaces. The predischarge by electrodes 3 is effected for a short time of about 0.2sec, whereafter main discharge is effected for about 5sec to connect the end parts by melt sticking. The impurities are thus thoroughly removed from the melt-stuck parts by the preheating, and the end faces to be connected are shaped by the predischarge, whereby the joining strength is remarkably improved and the light loss by the connection is decreased.

    • PURPOSE:To connect plural optical fiber strands collectively with arc welding, by fixing optical fiber strands after a secondary coating is removed to expose plural optical fiber strands and cutting them to true up connection end faces. CONSTITUTION:In the state where a secondary coating 2 is removed in the end part of a tape-shaped optical fiber core 1 to expose plural optical fiber strands 3, end face positions of strands 3 are normally irregular. A terminal reinforcing tool 4 is molded to be laid across exposed parts of strands 3 and the secondary coating 2 to fix them to each other, and optical fiber strands 3 are cut to an even length to true up their end face positions. Optical fiber cores 1 and 1' where end face positions of strands are trued up in this manner are allowed to face each other, and electricity is discharged from discharge electrodes 5 and 5' between which the gap of end faces is interposed as a discharge space, thus connecting plural optical fiber strands 3 collectively with arc welding.
