    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical amplifier which can improve the noise factor and reduce the cost. SOLUTION: A light to be amplified is input in an input terminal 11 and is amplified optically in an optical amplification medium 20 and output to an output terminal 12. The level of the light output from the output terminal 12 is detected with an output light monitor 40. A control unit 51 adjusts an excited energy supplied to the optical amplification medium 20 through an excitation section 30 so that the level of the output light obtained by the output light monitor 40 is constant, and performs ALC control. The control unit 51 monitors the level of the light to be input to the input terminal 11 on the basis of the level of the output light obtained by the output light monitor 40. In addition, the control unit 51 compares the output light with a first reference output light level. When it is decided that the level thereof is lower than the first reference output light level, the control unit 51 lowers the maximum supply quantity of excited energy supplied to the optical amplification medium 20 through the excitation section 30, and furthermore, it lowers the output light level still further than the first reference output light level.
