    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suitably secure joint strength between a ground electrode and a main metal fitting in a spark plug in which the ground electrode having a multilayered structure is resistance-welded to the main metal fitting.SOLUTION: A spark plug includes: a main electrode; an insulator; a main metal fitting; and a ground electrode which is welded to the main metal fitting at a base end portion. The ground electrode includes: a surface layer; and a core material being formed inside the surface layer and having heat conductivity higher than that of the surface layer. The thickness of the surface layer at a specific position is 0.2 mm or more and 0.4 mm or less, the specific position being placed 1 mm away from the base end portion in a direction toward a tip end side along an outer periphery of the ground electrode. The condition of W1≥W2×1.55-(W3+0.25) is satisfied, where W1 (mm) represents the width of the main metal fitting in a specific direction; W2 (mm) represents the thickness of the ground electrode in the specific direction at the specific position; and W3 (mm) represents the thickness of the surface layer in the specific direction. The specific direction is passing through the center axis of the ground electrode and perpendicular to the axial direction on a welding face of the main metal fitting and the base end portion.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a spark plug capable of maintaining durability of a chip without impairing the bonding strength of the chip bonded to a ground electrode. SOLUTION: A precious metal chip 70 is to be bonded to the ground electrode 60 of the spark plug, with its opposing surface 71 opposed to a center electrode, to thereby form a spark discharge gap. The chip 70 is temporarily bonded to an inner surface 63 of the ground electrode 60 by resistance welding. Since a pressing force is applied to the chip 70 during the resistance welding, flange portions are formed by expansion of the outer diameter of the chip 70 near a bottom surface 72 (bottom part) thereof. Laser welding is then performed by irradiation with laser light all around the chip 70 at an irradiation angle θ that falls within a range of 5 to 80 degrees. Even if shrinkage occurs after the laser welding, thinning of the outer diameter of the chip 70 will hardly occur because the flange portions have expanded to be greater than the outer diameter, and therefore the bonding strength of the chip 70 to the ground electrode 60 is not impaired.
