SOLUTION: Axial forces acting on a hollow expansion-type rock bolt are measured. The rock bolt has a measuring rod 50 fastened or arranged along a tube body 20. At the construction of the rock bolt, ultrasonic measurement is previously performed by transmitting ultrasonic waves from an incident part 11, an exposed part of the measuring rod 50, receiving reflected waves from gauge marks, and determining the reception time differences of the reflected waves from the gauge marks. Ultrasonic measurement is performed anew to compute axial forces on the basis of changes in reception time differences.

SOLUTION: The ultrasonic axial force measurement rock-bolt is of a steel pipe expansion type, and has an expandable steel pipe 20 and a measuring bar 50 for axial force measurement having benchmark points N1 to N5 for reflecting ultrasonic waves. Cutouts are formed as the benchmark points N1 to N5 on the measuring bar 50 on which each cutout is given a size approximately equal to that of the end face 52 of the measuring bar 50. The rock-bolt is provided with two or more of the measuring bars 50 having groups of the cutouts in such a way that a group of cutouts G1 on the measuring bar is shifted in a longitudinal position to the other group of cutouts G2 on the other measuring bar. The size of the cutout is determined using a cutout area ratio that is the ratio of the vertical wall area of the cutout to the total area of the section of the measuring bar perpendicular to its longitudinal direction.

SOLUTION: An ultrasonic axial force measuring rock bolt 10 of a steel pipe expanding type is driven into a tunnel internal wall, and tunnel excavation is carried out while an axial force generated at a rock bolt by the displacement of the tunnel internal wall is monitored. The rock bolt is formed of an expandable steel pipe 20 and a measuring rod 50 having a plurality of gauge marks 55 for measuring the axial force. Then the rock bolt is driven into the tunnel internal wall as part of timbering, and expanded to make intimate contact with the natural ground. Further, axial force distribution generated at the rock bolt is reflected to the designing of the timbering. Specifically, after driving/expansion, the monitoring of the axial force generated at the rock bolt is started, ultrasonic waves are made to fall on the measuring rod via an entrance portion 11 as an exposed section of the measuring rod, and receiving time differences of reflected waves are obtained from the gauge marks 55, to thereby calculate the axial force distribution.
