SOLUTION: The mechanical characteristic-testing machine of a material surface comprises a material-mounting stand that can travel within a horizontal surface and places a material to be measured, a slider for applying a vertical load that can travel in a vertical direction based on a specific vertical load application signal according to a test purpose, a load detector for detecting horizontal and vertical loads operating on the sample, a pressurization needle mounted to the sample side of the load detector, a vertical load-relaxing means that is provided between the load detector and the slider for applying a vertical load and has a spring system for relaxing the vertical load, a load direction-specifying means that is mounted to the load detector, has stiffness to the movement in the horizontal direction of the load detector, and is flexible to the movement in the vertical direction, and a signal-processing means for processing the detection signal of the load detector, the amount of displacement in the vertical direction of pressurization needle, or the like.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method by which mechanical driving characteristics of a completed storage medium drive unit can be evaluated in its mounted state without disassembling or remodeling the unit and a device suitable for the method. SOLUTION: The device is equipped with a torque detector 12 which can be fitted detachably to the drive unit 10 equipped with a rotating mechanism for a disk including a storage medium disk 1 and a following-up mechanism for a stored information track including a read head 2 for reading stored information from the storage medium disk 1, and an evaluation arithmetic processing unit ES which is equipped with a ROM storage unit which has an arithmetic procedure program for processing a torque detecting signal, a RAM storage unit which temporarily stores data of the torque detection signals and an arithmetic signals, an arithmetic processing part, a display recording part, and a switch mechanism part which sends measurement start and end command signals to an electronic control part DT supplying a driving current to a motor 6 of the disk rotating mechanism; and the torque of the whole drive unit is measured in a specific rotation period and the mechanical driving characteristics of the drive unit are found from time variation in the measured torque value.
