    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an element structure for confining an injected carrier in a luminescent region, producible as a silicon or germanium light-emitting element, and a manufacturing method thereof.SOLUTION: A narrow passage for a carrier, or a one-dimensional or two-dimensional quantum confinement region, is fabricated between an electrode and a luminescent region. Due to quantum confinement, a band gap in that portion is widened, constituting an energy barrier for both electrons and holes, so that a similar effect to that of the heterostructure of an ordinary III-V group semiconductor laser is obtained. Because no other elements than those used in an ordinary silicon process are used, with only controlling the shape of the element involved, manufacturing at low cost is possible.
