    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize character recognition whose precision is higher than a conventional method on the noise of thinning and dirt and a character string which is design-processed in a multilevel picture. SOLUTION: For separating a character area and a background area from a character string picture pattern which is design-processed such as a newspaper headline, an integration circuit 2 scans a multilevel picture pattern inputted from a multivalue picture pattern storage circuit 1 in plural directions, counts the product of the density of a prescribed picture element and the adjacent picture element, the product of the density of the prescribed picture element and a value obtained by subtracting the density of the prescribed picture element from a prescribed constant, the product of the value obtained by subtracting the density of the prescribed picture element from the prescribed constant and the density of the adjacent picture element and the product of the value obtained by subtracting the density of the prescribed picture element from the prescribed constant and the value obtained by subtracting the density of the adjacent picture element from the prescribed constant on a scanning line, and extracts a character string area by using the count values.

    • PURPOSE:To accurately identify a recognizing pattern despite occurrence of the misrecognition by using the integer acquired from an input image pattern and referring to an integer section table and an inter-category overlapping integer table. CONSTITUTION:An identification processing circuit 4 includes an integer producing circuit 5, an identification/recognition deciding circuit 6, a bit position table storing circuit 7, and an integer section table storing circuit 8. Then an image pattern having its normalized position and size is supplied to a binary image pattern, and the image value of each position of an input image is stored in each bit position shown on a bit position table for production of an integer. For instance, this integer is collated with a set standard dictionary for identification or recognition of a specific character or graphic category that is coincident with the input image. Furthermore the information on the binary image pattern that is not used for production of the standard dictionary is added to update the contents of the bit position table and an integer section table and an inter- category overlapping integer table of the standard dictionary respectively.

    • PURPOSE:To execute the processing at a high speed by using a category table which has been constituted by classifying in advance a category into groups at every element of a feature vector, and a group selection table, and executing a cumulative calculation of a decided value only with regard to some category names which are selected at every vector element. CONSTITUTION:A group selection table 2 is retrieved by an element value of an input feature vector, a group name of a group having a positive decided value except '0' and its decided value are read out, and subsequently, a category name is read out by retrieving a category table 1 by the group name which has been read out. A decided value cumulation processing means 4 cumulates the decided value onto an evaluated value table 4a in accordance with the category name which is read out by a selection processing means 3, and calculates an evaluated value. In case of a sort processing, in a sort processing means 5, the category name corresponding to the evaluated value given from the decided value cumulation processing means 4 is rearranged in a candidate category table in order from a larger one, and a candidate category extending from the first candidate category whose evaluated value and cumulated value are maximum to a prescribed rank order is outputted.

    • PURPOSE:To realize a highly efficient sorting of character subjects, by sorting the character patterns based on the degree of directional contribution of the length of the black dot row obtained with every direction from all black picture elements of the character pattern. CONSTITUTION:For the character pattern obtained by a photoelectric conversion or the like, the antennas are extended in eight directions decided previously from at least all black picture elements 8-1-8-3 of a character pattern 7 that received a binary coding, a normalization of position and size, a character framing process and a smoothing. Then the number of consecutive black dots obtained in each direction is calculated to obtain the degree of directional contribution of the black dots. Based on the value of the contribution, the features showing the distribution of length and direction are extracted for each character line of the character pattern to produce a feature table to sort the character patterns. A matching is obtained between the feature table and the feature dictionary table of each character that is already stored. In such way, the character patterns are sorted.
