    • PURPOSE:To clean steel and to extend the life of furnace wall refractories by charging a desulfurizing material into the furnace and blowing a stirring gas from bottom blowing nozzles therein to desulfurize the steel in the stage before tapping, then tapping the molten steel while the molten steel contg. slag is made to remain in the furnace. CONSTITUTION:The raw materials charged into the furnace body is heated and melted by the arcs generated by electrodes 4 and the bottom blowing nozzles 6, 7 are disposed to the furnace bottom to stir and refine the molten steel. The hearth 5 of the arc furnace constituted in the above-mentioned manner is formed to a recessed shape which is deepest in nearly the central area. A tap hole 9 provided with a stopper 10 is provided at such a height of the aperture at which the nozzles 6, 7 are held immersed at all times in the steel bath. The desulfurizing material is previously charged into the furnace and the stirring gas is blown from the nozzles 6, 7 into the molten steel to desulfurize the steel in the stage before tapping with the above- mentioned arc furnace. The molten steel is then tapped while part of the molten steel contg. the slag is made to remain in the furnace. The amt. of the remaining steel is confined to about >=1/10 the initial volume of the molten steel. The bottom blowing nozzles 6, 7 are preferably held surely immersed at all times into the remaining molten steel to prevent the damage thereof.

    • PURPOSE:To apply large stirring capacity to a molten metal bath and to accelerate melting and refining of metal by blowing an adequate volume of a stirring gas from plural nozzles disposed in a specific range of a furnace bottom part and interfering the waving of the molten metal bath with each other. CONSTITUTION:Scrap, ore raw material, alloy material, etc., are charged into a furnace body 1 consisting of a furnace wall 2 provided with water-cooling panels 3 and a hearth 7 and are melted and refined by the arcs generated by electrodes 6. >=3 Pieces of the nozzles 8... are disposed to the furnace bottom within a 0.3-0.8XD range when the inside diameter of the shell of the body 1 of the arc furnace constituted in the above-mentioned manner is designated as D. The stirring gas is blown from the nozzles 8... at the total flow rate of >=0.3Nm /ton.hr per ton of the molten metal. The waving of the molten metal bath generated by the blowing of the gas in the above-mentioned constitution is accelerated by the interference between the nozzles. The molten metal bath is thereby effectively stirred to accelerate the melting of the solid charge and to uniformize metallurgical reaction, bath temp. and components.
