    • PURPOSE:To significantly reduce the consumption of an electrode in electric discharge machining, and to reduce the surface roughness of a work by crashing a mixture obtained by heating and kneading both a carbonaceous material that has been crashed so as to have an average grain size of 10mum or less and a binder, into particles whose average grain size is 100 to 150% that of the carbonaceous material. CONSTITUTION:A carbonaceous material that has been crashed so as to have an average grain size of 10mum or less and a binder are heated and kneaded for obtaining a mixture. This mixture is crashed into particles whose average grain size is 100 to 150% that of the carbonaceous material, and is subjected to CIP(cold isostatical press) molding, baking, and graphitization for obtaining a desired graphite electrode A for electric discharge machining. The bulk density of the electrode A can thus be significantly reduced, and unexpectedly, the consumption of the electrode at the time of electric discharge machining can be significantly reduced. Since the bulk density can be reduced, the rise in hardness and the percent defective due to crack at the time of baking and graphitization can be reduced. Further, the structure of the electrode A becomes uniform as the average grain size of the mixture approaches that of the carbonaceous material, and accordingly the consumption of the electrode can be reduced.
